Bangalore’s traffic is often ridiculed. Despite this, Bangalore is still considered one of the most livable cities in India. The Center for Science and Environment (CSE) released the latest report titled “The State of India’s Environment in figures 2021” on June 16 and ranked Bangalore as the most livable city in India. Bangalore was voted the best city overall, followed by Chennai, Shimla, and Bhubaneswar.

According to the report, only three state capitals are among the top ten most livable cities. The report focuses on four dimensions, quality of life, economic ability, sustainability, and citizen perception, to determine the score. Among the 100 points in all dimensions, Bangalore has an ease of living index score of 66.7, followed by Chennai, at 62.61, while Bangalore has the highest score for economic performance parameters (78.82), and Chennai has the highest score for quality of life parameters (60.84). Meanwhile, Delhi was rated as the worst capital city with a score of 69.4; and Bangalore, with a score of 78 does not look much better. The city with the highest city perception is Bhubaneswar (94 points).

The report emphasizes that the lack of economic opportunities in Indian state capitals is worrying. As per the report, only one state capital (Bangalore) has appropriate economic potential, 78.82 points out of 100. The other four state capitals (Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi) and Hyderabad provide average economic opportunities. The rest are not even up to 30 points (out of 100 points).
