Bengaluru: With increasing encroachments along natural waterways giving rise to flooding and congesting roads, BBMP has come up with a solution to resolve the twin problems: Build roads and parks along storm water drains.
The civic body plans to develop new roads and parks in the buffer zones of storm water drains in Hebbal, Yelahanka, and RR Nagarand the BBMP administrator SR Umashankar recently approved a land acquisition process to implement this, official sources confirmed.
This solution, which will be part of the BBMP’s plan to develop at least 300km of roads in its limits, is the result of the lessons learnt by the civic body in clearing SWD encroachments and the long-drawn process required for the same, sources said.
The Palike initially proposed to develop roads for over a 2-km stretch in the buffer zone of SWD between Yelahanka and Jakkur lakes. The Palike has identified 120 properties to be acquired from private persons between Yelahanka and Jakkur lakes.
However, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has declared 50 metres from the centre of the primary drain as a buffer zone, while it is 25 metres in the secondary drains and 15 metres from tertiary drains. The BBMP officials said they will build roads up to 24 metres in the primary drains and
