The Valley School is a co-educational private day school located 20 km south of Bangalore, India. Founded in 1978 by philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti, it has around 325 students from ages 6 to 17.
Interactions between teacher and student are informal and based on Jiddu Krishnamurti’s philosophy of freedom with responsibility. Fear is not encouraged, rewards and punishments are kept to a minimum, and students are encouraged to direct their learning.
The lower school curriculum is based on Jiddu Krishnamurti’s philosophies, allowing teachers and students freedom and flexibility. Along with science and humanities, extra-curricular activities are encouraged. Tests and examinations are not held until Grade 9 when the student will have their first exam conducted by the school.
Higher classes follow the ICSE curriculum and sit for nationwide public board exams at the end of class 10. Class 12 students appear for ISC exams conducted by the same board. The school has had a 100% pass rate since 1999.
The Valley School is set on a 103-acre campus with a lake, two artificial ponds, dams, and three Banyan trees. Academic buildings are concentrated around the main school in the east, while the student dormitories and residential quarters are located in the west. There is also an Amphitheater with a new Art Village built around it.
The Valley School had three entrances, the first being the main entrance to the school building, the second leading to the football field, and the third giving access to the Study Centre, residential houses, and Art Village. It is divided into three divisions – Junior School (classes 1-4), Middle School (classes 5-7), and Senior School (classes 8-12). Its logo is a stylized Neem Tree that stands at its highest point.
