St. Mary’s Basilica is located in the Archdiocese of Bangalore, India. It is one of the oldest churches in the state and has been elevated to the status of a minor basilica. It is a spacious gothic-style Church designed in the form of a cross. It has an imposing and magnificent tower, and a 6-foot statue of Mother Mary holding Child Jesus in her arms is set up just outside. The statue is draped in a saree, which is the typical dress of an Indian lady. It is said that when the new Church was built, people tried to remove the statue to install it on a prominent altar inside, but failed due to the statue’s miraculous power. The Main Feast of the Church is celebrated on the 8th of September and is considered of utmost importance by the people of the Archdiocese and the state of Karnataka, which attracts devotees from the entire region. St. Mary’s Basilica began as a thatched hut built by Tamil Christian migrants from Gingee in the 17th century. Bangalore’s first Church, Drummers’ Chapel, was built during Hyder Ali’s tenure in 1724-25. When Tippu Sultan ascended the throne, Christian missionaries had to flee Mysore. In 1799, the British seized Srirangapattana from Tipu Sultan and Jean-Antoine Dubois arrived and began restoring the Catholic religion. In 1811, Dubois built a small chapel with a rectory for priests. The church was destroyed during the communal riots of 1832. Between 1856-1882, the church was rebuilt with its original name and was consecrated in 1882. The church was elevated to the status of a minor basilica in 1973. An annual nine-day Novena is held each year, with Mass offered in English, Kannada, and Tamil. The basilica has been built in the Gothic style with arches, ornamental motifs, and stained glass windows. Multiple columns with rich Corinthian capitals support the stately arches of the church. The stained glass windows were removed during World War II and were subsequently restored in 1947. St. Mary’s Feast, celebrating the birth of Mother Mary, is the most important festival celebrated at the basilica. It is attended by 500,000 people and the festivities last for 10 days. On the last day, a grand chariot procession is held and mass marriages are conducted for the poor and needy.
